As we’ve started this new year, I’ve been reflecting on our city and the promise that Albuquerque holds. The promise of safe communities, where opportunity is available to all, and where we take pride in what we achieve together. The road toward that promise has never been easy, it’s taken hard work and will take even more as we work to overcome the rise in violent crime and housing insecurity that is affecting our communities so deeply today.
We have an enormous opportunity to confront these challenges as the new legislative session begins. Through the Metro Crime Initiative, we convened leaders around the state this summer and laid the path, producing a list of 40 concrete action items that span state, local, and judicial levels to turn the tide on crime and create sustainable change.

Our communities can’t wait any longer for policies that will keep violent offenders off the streets, increased access to behavioral health and addiction treatment, and laws that make sure guns are properly secured and kept out of the wrong hands. We are also pursuing tens of millions of dollars in investment for affordable housing and for the Gateway Center to serve as the first low-barrier shelter to help folks off the street and into stable housing.
